From Adam and Eve to today’s digital world, one thing remains unchanged—a guilty conscience. It’s not outward things that stain us, but the pride within, the self-pity we nurse, the bitterness we carry, the lust we entertain, the envy and jealousy we harbor, the greed that drives us, and the fear that paralyzes us—all leading to actions that reflect a dying soul. Sin ruined their intimacy with God, fractured their relationship with each other, and brought shame upon themselves. And we carry that same brokenness.

The Old Testament sacrifices dealt with ceremonial uncleanness, but not the inner stain. “Gifts and sacrifices… cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper.” (Hebrews 9:9, NIV) No ritual or act of penance can remove guilt.

But Christ came with a better sacrifice—Himself.
“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ… cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14, NIV)
