In this Lenten season, We are continuing our journey mediating John Piper’s Fifty reasons why Jesus came to die. Today we are on 14th Day of Lent and we will see the 14th reason
40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. Jeremiah 32:40
The Bible speaks of two covenants—the old covenant given through Moses and the new covenant established through Christ. A covenant is a binding agreement, and in Scripture, God Himself sets the terms.
The old covenant, based on the law, was written on stone but lacked the power to transform hearts. It could not bring true life because it was external. But God promised a new covenant:
“He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (2 Corinthians 3:6, NIV)
The new covenant is built on Jesus’ suffering and death. He said:
“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.” (Mark 14:24, NIV)
This covenant guarantees two things:
- Heart Transformation – “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.” (Jeremiah 31:33, NIV)
- Total Forgiveness – “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34, NIV)
To guarantee that this covenant will not fail, Christ takes the initiative to create the faith and secure the faithfulness of his people. The 14th reason #WhyJesusCametoDie
Jesus came to die To bring us to faith and keep us Faithful
The suffering and death of Christ guarantees the inner change of his people (the
law written on their hearts) and the forgiveness of their sins
Through Christ’s blood, we are not only given new hearts but also secure in Him forever (Jeremiah 32:40). The Spirit gives life, and the covenant will never fail!
