Ephesians Study Series – Day 1Day 2Day 3 , Day 4Day 5 , Day 6, Day 7

Sin is the failure to be what we ought to be and could be. It is universal.

The above line is the quote of Rev. William Barclay in his commentary to the Epistle of Ephesians. How does he gives this definition for sin? He does that by going to the roots of the word sin.

Hamartia” the greek word for “Sin“, means failure to hit the target. It is associated with shooting. A person shot his arrow which misses the target, that’s “Hamartia”. So Sin can be understood as “failure to hit the target of Life that God has set for us“. That’s why Sin is Universal. Are we a good person as we might be? a good spouse as we might be? a good brother/sister as we could be?, a good student as we can be? a good employer/employee we could be?. Even on relative basis we may say “No” for some of these questions. Then how about measuring the goodness of our roles with the goodness standards set by God…..Sin is the failure to be what we ought to be and could be. It is Universal.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins -Ephesians 2:1
