The Gospel of John records an incident where Jesus walks on water. This is the fifth sign recorded in John’s gospel.
After feeding the large crowd, Jesus went in to a solitary place probably to meditate & pray. He asked the disciples to leave in a boat. In the evening, disciples took a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum.
A strong wind started blowing the sea of Galilee. Technically, it’s not a sea and it’s a large lake. It’s also about 700 feet below the sea level. They say storms are very unlikely here. However, it’s recorded in History that storms are in deed possible and it’s definitely capable of turning down a fishermen boat of those times. Do check this video.
With this little bit of background, let’s go back to the scripture text in John 6:16-21. A strong wind, it was evening and was dark and the water’s grew rough. Most importantly, Jesus was not with them. Apostle John makes a point to record it in verse 17b – Jesus had not yet joined them
FEAR would have grasped the disciples, their lives were in danger. When they had rowed about 4 miles, they saw Jesus approaching them walking on the water. For someone who created this Planet Earth, Walking on what he created isn’t a big deal. But for those who were created by HIM, it was an unimaginable sight and with darkness all around, the disciples were even more frightened. My wife has magnificently captured this moment in this picture. Looking at the disciples, Jesus makes an emphatic statement.
“It is I; don’t be afraid.”
John 6:20
The next verse records, When they were willing to take him into the boat, the boat reached the shore. If we have to interpret it, the moment Jesus was on-board they reached the destination.
Jesus not only protected the disciples, but ensured that they reached the destination. I am sure we would have multiple situations when Jesus took us to the shore. Can you recall those moments & testify moments when God removed your fears? It could be small moments where HE healed you, HE met your financial needs, HE gave you a success at work or school…just think of those moments and Praise HIM. It’s also assurance that the shore is near for those fearful moments you are navigating now.
Just before closing this blog, I want to leave with this question
Is there something you are trying to do without Jesus?
If you answered yes, Jesus is waiting, take HIM aboard immediately.
