In our journey through the “Faith People” series, we’ve looked at our purpose and the character of the God who calls us. Today, we step back to the very first heartbeat of history to answer a foundational question: What is creation?
To understand why the world feels so broken today, we have to remember how it was designed to function in the beginning.
Ex Nihilo: Beauty Out of Nothing
The story of everything starts with five of the most powerful words ever written: “In the beginning, God created…” (Genesis 1:1).
Creation wasn’t God reorganizing existing matter or working with leftovers. It was Ex Nihilo—creation out of nothing. Creation is God bringing everything into existence out of nothing by His powerful word. As we see in John 1:1-3, the “Word” was there in the beginning, and through Him, all things were made. God simply spoke, and galaxies flared into existence. His powerful Word is the architect of every sunset, every mountain range, and every breath we take. The world could not have evolved by chance. The order and beauty found in this world reveal a Creator even to those who have not heard the Gospel.
The Crown of Creation
Among all the wonders of the stars and the seas, God did something unique on the sixth day. He didn’t just speak mankind into existence from a distance; He stepped in closer.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
We are being made in the Imago Dei (the Image of God) is our highest honor. We were created righteous and holy, designed with the capacity to know Him, love Him, and live with Him forever. We weren’t just “part” of nature; we were appointed to rule over it as His stewards.
A World Without a Shadow
It’s hard for us to imagine a world without “bad news,” but that was the original reality. In Genesis 1:31, God looked at everything He had made and declared it “very good.” In this original design:
- There was no sickness to fear.
- There was no death to grieve.
- There was no decay to fight.
- There was no shame.
Genesis 2:25 paints the ultimate picture of peace: “Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.” There were no walls between man and God, and no walls between man and woman. It was a world of total transparency and total trust.
Reflect: When we see the beauty of a landscape or the innocence of a newborn, we are catching “echoes” of that original creation. We feel a homesickness for this world because it’s the world we were actually made for.
Next Step: Now that we’ve seen the “Very Good” beginning, we have to face the hard question: What went wrong? Stay tuned as we explore the Fall and the promise of restoration in our next blog.
