The Bible teaches us that God designed the family as the basic building block of society. In Ephesians 5:21-33, the apostle Paul gives instructions to husbands and wives on how to live in a Christ-centered marriage. the Christian Family model. In this passage, Paul describes the Christian family model, which involves mutual submission, sacrificial love, and a reflection of Christ’s relationship with his church.
Mutual Submission
Paul begins by calling for mutual submission between husbands and wives. In verse 21, he writes, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” This means that both spouses should be willing to submit to one another, not just in the big decisions, but also in the everyday decisions of life. Both partners should consider the other’s needs and desires as important as their own, out of a reverence for Christ.
Sacrificial Love
Paul then instructs husbands to love their wives sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (verse 25). This means that husbands should be willing to lay down their own lives and desires for the sake of their wives. They should be willing to make sacrifices and put the needs of their wives before their own, just as Christ did for his church.
A Reflection of Christ’s Relationship with the Church
Finally, Paul explains that the Christian family model should reflect the relationship between Christ and his church. Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church, and wives are to submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ (verse 24). This means that husbands should lead their wives with love and grace, just as Christ leads his church. And wives should submit to their husbands, trusting that they are being led by a man who loves them sacrificially and has their best interests at heart.
The Christian family model described in Ephesians 5:21-33 is a beautiful picture of mutual submission and sacrificial love. Husbands and wives who follow this model can experience a deep sense of intimacy and closeness, knowing that they are living in a way that honors God. When both partners are willing to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ, and when husbands love their wives sacrificially and wives submit to their husbands with trust and respect, the result is a Christ-centered marriage that can weather any storm.
Apostle Paul, uses the Christ-Church (Believer) relationship and compares it with the relationship of a marriage. In John’s Gospel we have Jesus Christ explaining the relationship between Him & the believer using the Metaphor of True Vine. He begins it saying “I AM the true Vine“. True Vine Model extended to True Vine Believer Model
I made an attempt to extend the True Vine Believer model to the Christian Family, where the Husbands have to play the role of Jesus Christ by showing the sacrificial love of Christ towards his wife and wife reciprocates with submission towards a sacrificial love. Both these passages, is relevant for a Christian family because it emphasizes the importance of staying connected to Christ and each other in order to bear fruit and experience joy and peace in their marriage.
When both partners in a marriage are committed to abiding in Christ, they will have a shared foundation and purpose that can help them navigate the ups and downs of married life. They will also be better equipped to love and serve one another with selflessness and grace. Practical ways for couples to abide in Christ include praying together, attending church and other Christian events together, reading the Bible and other spiritual books together, and engaging in acts of service together.
When they are focused on bearing fruit (the Christian family), they will be more likely to treat each other with kindness, respect, and selflessness. They will also be more likely to work together to serve others and make a positive impact in their community. When both partners in a marriage are committed to loving and obeying God, they will be more likely to treat each other with the love, respect, and selflessness that God desires. They will also be more likely to work together to honor God’s purposes for their marriage.
