Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:1a).

What does it mean to be a Servant of Christ Jesus? The Greek word used by Paul here is duolos. It means more than a servant. It means slave. Let’s look at why Paul says this in three ways.

  • Absolute possession of Christ
  • Absolute obedience to Christ.
  • Absolute succession of the Christ-like.
  1. An absolute possession of Christ because Christ loved Paul (me) and Christ bought Paul (me) with a price (I Cor 6:20)
  2. An absolute obedience to Christ as his (my) master’s (Christ’s) decision must regulate his life.
  3. An absolute succession of the Godly because, Paul (I) humbly puts him (me) in succession of Moses (Joshua 1:2), Joshua (Judges 2:8), David (Psalms 78:70) and of the Prophets (Amos 3:7, Jeremiah 7:25).
